When we reviewed one of Samsung’s Series 6 LCDs last year, we were the first review source to break the news that the supposed “Full HD 3D” LCD was, in fact, only displaying tri-dimensional images at half resolution (we developed our own 3D test materials for assessing resolution and motion performance). Fortunately, the UE40ES6300 does not follow the same route, and offers a full resolution 3-D image.

Motion is still not perfect, though. As with many LCD 3D designs, the Samsung UE40ES6300′s is 60hz-centric, which makes sense, given that Samsung is based in South Korea. 50hz 3D content plays back with stutter, as does 24p 3D content from Blu-ray. That’s unfortunate, because European users will probably be feeding 24p and 50hz extra-dimensional material almost exclusively. There is some relief, though: the [Motion Plus] controls can be configured in a way that causes the 3DTV to perform motion interpolation, which solves the judder problem. Of course, that does mean that movies will appear with the “soap opera effect”, which, to purist users, might be more of a problem than the original judder. The user has some degree of control here, although there’s no perfect solution to simply display 3D motion “as-is” unless it’s in the 60hz format.

Watching Hugo on the UE40ES6300, we were happy with the level of brightness being offered – typically a strong point or LCD technology – but did note some crosstalk visible around high contrast areas. Like most things about the TV, the performance is good overall, but leaves room for improvement.

Saturation. The Canon EOS Rebel T4i produces images with fairly accurate saturation levels. Strong reds, oranges, dark greens and dark blues are pushed a little, while yellow and cyan are slightly muted. The mean saturation of 108.3% (8.3% oversaturated) at base ISO is not too pumped yet not too dull, and saturation remains fairly consistent over the ISO range except at ISO 25,800 where it drops off noticeable. Most consumer digital cameras produce color that's more highly saturated (more intense) than found in the original subjects. This is simply because most people like their color a bit brighter than life. 

 

Skin tones. The Canon T4i produced pleasing, natural-looking Caucasian skin tones in our tests when using both manual and auto white balance settings. Darker skin tones show a small nudge toward orange, but good results overall. Where oversaturation is most problematic is on Caucasian skin tones, as it's very easy for these "memory colors" to be seen as too bright, too pink, too yellow, etc. 

Hue. The Canon Rebel T4i's hue accuracy is excellent, much better than average. There are the usual shifts in cyan toward blue (actually quite small), red toward orange, and orange toward yellow, but all are fairly minor. (The cyan to blue shift is very common among the digital cameras we test; we think it's a deliberate choice by camera engineers to produce better-looking sky colors.) Average "delta-C" color error at base ISO is only 3.23, which is outstanding, one of the best scores we've recorded to date. Hue is "what color" the color is.

Canon Rebel T4i Review

Offering video on an SLR was a neat trick, but the inability to autofocus while shooting like you can with most common camcorders was disappointing. Canon's latest digital SLR camera, the Rebel T4i, attempts to address the issue with a new Hybrid AF system and two new lenses designed to make shooting video more like consumers expect.Canon's included a host of other improvements as well, bringing the Rebel T4i into closer contention with both compact system cameras and even smartphones. Those improvements include a faster frame rate of five frames per second, nine cross-type AF points, a stereo microphone, and a 3-inch articulating LCD with an integrated touch panel. And the best news about the touch panel is that it's capacitive, not resistive. That means it works more like current smartphones and tablets, requiring only a gentle touch with a finger. Easily my favorite change to the Canon T4i is the new quieter shutter mechanism, which operates without that Rebel winding sound that's always spoiled the camera for me.
